2-PLY Calfheads

What Are 2-Ply Drumheads?

2-ply drumheads consist of two layers of calfskin stacked together. This construction makes them significantly more durable than their single-ply heads, which are made from a single layer of material. The dual layers not only add strength but also change the tonal characteristics of the drum.

The Sound of 2-Ply Drumheads

The tone produced by 2-ply heads is generally more focused and controlled. Because the two layers dampen the vibration more than single-ply heads, the resulting sound has less sustain and overtones. This gives 2-ply heads a warmer, deeper sound with more controlled resonance, which many drummers prefer for styles like rock, pop, and fusion.

For example, on toms and bass drums, 2-ply drumheads can provide that deep, punchy tone that cuts through loud mixes, making them ideal for live performances or amplified settings. While single-ply heads often have a bright and open sound, 2-ply heads lean towards a fat, warm tone with added durability for aggressive playing styles.

Durability and Strength

One of the main reasons drummers choose 2-ply heads is durability. Since the two layers distribute the force of each stroke more evenly, they can withstand harder hits and more extended play sessions without wearing out as quickly as single-ply heads. For drummers who hit hard or who frequently play styles like rock, metal, or punk, where durability is a necessity, 2-ply drumheads are a perfect fit.

In situations where drums are miked up, especially during recording or live performances, the added strength of a 2-ply head can provide consistent sound for long periods without the risk of breakage mid-performance.

Pros and Cons of 2-Ply Drumheads

Pros:

  • Durability & Tuning: Can withstand harder playing and are more stable in tuning.
  • Control: Offers a focused, warm tone with reduced overtones and sustain.
  • Versatility: Works well on toms, snare drums, and bass drums across a range of styles.
  • Sound: 2-ply but still calf – gives you a fat and warm sound.

Cons:

  • Less Resonance: The sound is more controlled, which may not appeal to drummers seeking open, resonant tones.
  • Heavier Feel: The two layers can feel stiffer under the sticks, which some drummers may find less responsive than single-ply heads.
  • Slightly Less Brightness: Due to the added mass, 2-ply heads can have a slightly darker tone than single-ply options, which may not suit every style.
